Carahsoft Awarded National Institutes of Health Contract to Drive Innovation in the Cloud

Agreement makes Google Cloud Platform solutions available to meet data storage needs of NIH-funded research projects

RESTON, Va., Nov. 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Carahsoft Technology Corp., The Trusted Government IT Solutions Provider®, today announced that it will be working with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Google Cloud. As a partner of Google Cloud, Carahsoft will deliver Google Cloud services to support the NIH’s Science and Technology Research Infrastructure for Discovery, Experimentation, and Sustainability (STRIDES) Initiative.

The initiative aims to reduce economic and technological barriers to accessing and computing on large biomedical data sets, making this information more available to accelerate biomedical advances. Google Cloud was the first cloud service provider to join the STRIDES Initiative, and Carahsoft will partner with Google Cloud to support NIH-funded institutions.

The NIH Institutes and Centers support researchers at over 2,500 academic and research institutions. As projects generated at these institutions mature, data have traditionally been stored and made available via public repositories or at local institutions. This model has become strained as the number of research projects and data produced grow exponentially. This makes it difficult for the research community attempting to integrate, analyze and share biomedical data sets.

To address these challenges and meet the goal of making high-value data more accessible through the cloud, Carahsoft will work as a Google Cloud partner to advance the NIH STRIDES Initiative.

“The NIH has a mission to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability,” said Terry Drinkwine, Vice President of the Google Cloud team at Carahsoft. “Carahsoft is honored to support the NIH STRIDES Initiative which will allow the NIH and its research institutions to come closer to fulfilling that mission.”

Google Cloud computing solutions will be available to the NIH and NIH designated recipients. NIH will work with the research community to develop policies surrounding the implementation of these solutions.

This work is supported by NIH award OT2OD027060.
