Huambo: More than 250.000 square meters free of landmines
Huambo, ANGOLA, November 4 - British non-governmental organization, The Halo Trust, has cleared more than 250.000 square meters from landmines from January to September this year, in the Angola’s central province of Huambo. ,
Speaking to Angop on Wednesday, the Halo Trust local officer, Lucas Olendereck, underlined that the cleared areas are already being used for agricultural proposes by the rural communities.
During the referred period, the Halo Trust have removed and destroyed 335 various unexploded ordnance, among which several anti-personal, and anti-tanks landmines besides over 1.500 ammunitions that were seized from civil population.
The Halo Trust, which intends to have the province of Huambo declared free from landmines by 2018, has also been holding awareness campaign among children and adults, on the risks of landmines to avoid disasters, the official said.
The British NGO has been operating in the province of Huambo since 1995.
During this period over 15.399 anti-personal, 480 anti-tanks landmines and over 28.000 ammunitions were destroyed resulting in the clearance of an area ofmore than 4.9 million square meters in Huambo province.
