Statement by IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Helmut Kohl
June 16, 2017
Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement today after the news of the death of Helmut Kohl:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, a visionary statesman who did so much for the French-German friendship and the idea of a peaceful and prosperous Europe.
“It is impossible to imagine a unified Germany without Helmut Kohl’s unshakable commitment to building bridges between the East and West. His name will forever be associated with the deepening of the European Union and the creation of the common European currency.
“A child during the Second World War, he believed in the importance of international cooperation, which remains as critical today as it was during Helmut Kohl’s life.”
