Miami International Piano Festival Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Russian and Belgium Pianists Debuts, Canadian Prodigy, and Opera and Piano Grand Finale

MIAMI, FLORIDA , UNITED STATES , May 11, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- MIAMI˗The Miami International Piano Festival concludes its 20th anniversary celebration with pianists from Russia, Belgium, and Canada, May 11 to May 14, 2017, at the Colony Theatre. The Festival’s Discovery Series ends on Mother’s Day, with an opera and piano transcriptions program, in collaboration with the Vocal Studio of Manny Perez.

Russian virtuoso Misha Namirovsky opens the series on Thursday, May 11 at 7:45 p.m.; Belgian pianists Julien Libeer and Florian Noack perform on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, respectively, each at 7:45 p.m.; and Canadian 14-year-old prodigy Leonid Nediak performs Saturday, May 13, at 3 p.m. The series closes with a grand finale on Sunday, May 14, at 7 p.m., offering an all-new reprise of opera performances and piano transcriptions featuring 13 vocalists and two pianists, Kemal Gekic from Croatia and Florian Noack from Belgium. The Festival’s lecturer-in-residence, Prof. Frank Cooper, will again provide program introductions prior to each piano performance on May 11-13.

Established in 1998 as a nonprofit organization by co-founders Giselle Brodsky and Edith Sorin, the Festival has brought over 100 pianists to Miami-Dade and Broward counties since its inception, through venues such as the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Anne Kolb Nature Center, and the Colony Theatre. The Festival’s mission is to identify international young talent, assist in the development of their careers, and introduce their artistry to Miami audiences.
The 2016-2017 celebratory season recently introduced five outstanding pianists to sold-out audiences at the “Classical Sundays at Five” series at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (Fabio Martino, Brazil; Kotaro Fukuma, Japan; Zlata Chochieva, Russia; Pietro de Maria, Italy; and Misha Dacic, Serbia). Chinese pianist Sijing Ye performed at the Anne Kolb Nature Center, a recent site addition to expand the Festival’s outreach.

“Our Festival has brought exceptional talent to Miami. We offer much more than recitals--we expose our audiences to experiences that will forever change their perception and understanding of music,” Brodsky said.

“This celebratory year has truly impacted music lovers. We are proud to continue to enrich the arts in the Miami area--a true labor of love,” Sorin said.

“The Discovery Series’ grand finale, The Magic of Opera and Piano Transcriptions, is a one-of-a-kind program of opera arias and piano performances that has become part of the Festival and a culturally and musically enriching experience in our community,” Perez said.

The success of the Festival’s mission has gained worldwide recognition and attracted emerging and accomplished performers over the years, many of whom have launched their performing careers in Miami and obtained coveted awards, such as the Gilmore Artist Award (Piotr Anderszeski, Ingrid Fliter). Others have won top prizes at world-renown international piano competitions, and have signed with notable management agencies, receiving prestigious recording opportunities.
