Arms Control and International Security: U.S.-Republic of Korea Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group
The United States and the Republic of Korea will hold the bilateral Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG) on December 20 in Washington, DC. The EDSCG provides an opportunity for both governments to examine how best to strengthen extended deterrence and discuss efforts to improve the Alliance’s comprehensive deterrence posture.
For the Republic of Korea, the meeting is led by First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lim Sung-nam and Deputy Minister for Defense Policy of the Ministry of National Defense Yoo Jeh-seung. The U.S. delegation will be led by Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas Countryman, and Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy David Shear. The inaugural EDSCG will be held at the State Department and will be co-chaired by the Diplomatic and Defense establishments from both countries.
