On this day in 1855, Eugene V. Debs was born. In 1894, he led one of the largest strikes in American history, the Chicago Pullman Palace Car Co. strike, which affected more than 250,000 workers in 27 states. A brilliant speaker, editor and writer, he was jailed for defying a court injunction against that strike, and later for his opposition to World War I. He founded the Socialist Party of America and ran on that ticket five times for U.S. President, losing every time. He ran his last presidential campaign while serving ten years in prison for his opposition to the war. He won more than a million votes.
