Sri Lanka’s main Tamil political party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have opposed giving foremost position to Buddhism in the new Constitution. It is calling for “secular constitution where there is no special place for a single religion, and instead all religions should be given equal status in the country."

Buddhism have been the official religion of Sri Lanka since 1972.

Last month thousands of Tamils rallied in the northern city of Jaffna opposing building of Buddhist temples in Tamil areas, where hardly any Sinhalese live. Tamils are predominantly Hindus and Sinhalese are predominantly Buddhists.

Sri Lankan military, who are almost exclusively from the Sinhalese community, are stationed in Tamil areas in very large numbers even after the war ended six years ago. Sri Lankan military have been accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against Tamil ethnic group. According to UN internal review report on Sri Lanka, around 70 thousand Tamils were killed in six months in 2009 and hundreds of Tamil women were sexually assaulted and raped by the Sri Lankan Security forces.
