Coalition, Iraqi Forces to Investigate Strikes South of Mosul

BAGHDAD, Oct. 5, 2016 — Coalition and Iraqi forces will conduct a joint investigation in the wake of coalition strikes today on a building being used by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials said.

Coalition forces conducted strikes on the building after ISIL fired at Iraqi security forces near Kharaib Jabr, a village south of Mosul, Iraq.

Coordinated With Iraqi Government

The strikes were coordinated by, with and through Iraq’s government in support of Iraqi security forces, who requested the strike, officials said in a statement, adding that initial battle damage assessment reports indicated that one building was destroyed and eight enemy fighters were killed.

“We are aware of the reports that Sunni tribal fighters were in the building that was struck, and we are taking those reports seriously,” Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman said in the statement.

“The coalition takes extraordinary precautions to avoid friendly or civilian casualties,” the statement said, “applying rigorous standards in its targeting processes, from a comprehensive analysis of all available intelligence to a careful selection of munitions.”
