ACCRA, GREATER ACCRA, GHANA, September 27, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA) in the course of its inaugural General Assembly held on 27th of September 2016, elected its seven-man Executive Board headed by a President: Mr. Moussa Diabate from Mali.

The event officially marks the birth of the Association after a nine-month sustained coordination effort of the USAID-West African Fertilizer Program (WAFP) implemented by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).

Showing his appreciation for the confidence the house reposed in the newly elected board, Mr. Diabate told representatives of the private sector fertilizer stakeholders from the ECOWAS region that achieving the set goals and the task ahead would demand the support of all and sundry. “I enjoin you to be critical of the board’s actions and decisions in order to inspire us to attain excellence. Together, we can achieve” he added.

In attendance at the two-day meeting were twenty two representatives over twenty six comprised of producers, blenders and importers from eight ECOWAS Member States, officials of the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) who brought together and nurtured the key stakeholders into a viable platform that has now metamorphosed into the West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA).

A brainchild of the USAID-West African Fertilizer Program, WAFA is intended to be a regional strategic partner in the creation and maintenance of an enabling regional environment that would facilitate the availability and use of quality and affordable fertilizers in West Africa.

Congratulating members of the association’s newly elected board; Mr Martin Drevon of IFDC reiterated USAID-WAFP and IFDC’s commitments to support the sustainability of the WAFA initiative strengthening its capacity over the next eight months.

“The nature of this support will comprise of funding for the permanent secretariat, provision of office accommodation to house the association, facilitating a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between WAFA and ECOWAS & other partners including the transfer of USAID-WAFP business tools to WAFA” he concluded.

The West African Fertilizer Association would be temporarily sheltered at the IFDC Offices in Bamako, Mali.
