Youth Giving Becomes a Philanthropic Force

Foundation Center Launches YouthGiving.org as Global Hub for Dynamic, Growing Movement

/EINPresswire.com/ -- NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - June 27, 2016) - Young people worldwide are transforming their communities and themselves by making grants -- over $14 million since 2001 -- to causes they're passionate about. Now, this rapidly developing movement will have a unique gathering place, YouthGiving.org, where young people and adults interested in grantmaking can explore stories of giving, learn from experts, and discover opportunities to raise their voices.

Foundation Center's 2014 report, Scanning the Landscape of Youth Philanthropy: Observations and Recommendations for Strengthening a Growing Field, revealed the scale of youth giving and the need for an online hub like YouthGiving.org where data, knowledge, stories, and resources could be shared both locally and globally.

"Youth are making grants through more than 800 programs around the world. Most of these young people are not independently wealthy, but their voices and passion wield incredible power," shared Jen Bokoff, Foundation Center's Director of Knowledge Services. "They're conducting needs assessments, releasing requests for proposals, and making grant decisions. YouthGiving.org gives these changemakers a platform for amplifying their expertise, connecting across programs, and strengthening practice."

Khayriyyah MuhammadSmith has been involved in the youth grantmaking community since high school, and is currently an intern at the Council of Michigan Foundations working to organize a youth philanthropy conference. "Not many people know that there are so many grant dollars out there controlled by people my age and younger -- and how we're making a difference to real people," said MuhammadSmith. "I remember meeting one woman who was able to finish high school because of our grants. That was when it hit me -- the power of what we're doing. And now, with YouthGiving.org, there's a way to share those stories and inspire more people to do the same."

Developed with Foundation Center expertise, YouthGiving.org gathers the collective knowledge of this movement and shares it for free so young people and the adults who support them worldwide can:

  • Apply best practices to improve their work
  • Share knowledge and experiences
  • Find potential partners
  • Develop leadership and philanthropy skills
  • Explore hundreds of youth grantmaking programs and over 3,000 youth-driven grants

YouthGiving.org will help bring this movement to scale, making it possible for new programs to emerge and existing programs to deepen through broadened awareness. The website is part of Foundation Center's suite of Knowledge Services, which blends information, analysis, and technology to help funders and others in the social sector make strategic decisions and improve their practice.

Foundation Center partnered on this project with a multi-generational advisory committee and received generous support from the Andrus Family Fund, Leading to Change, and the Frieda C. Fox Family, Conrad N. Hilton, Charles Stewart Mott, and Tarsadia foundations.
