Bathgate Academy raise money for local charity as part of food challenge
27 May 2016
Yesterday (26 May 2016) pupils from Bathgate Academy organised a fundraising event at their local TESCO where shoppers took home some tasty Scotch Beef burgers in exchange for a donation to charity.
This event was set up as part of successful partnership between Bathgate Academy and leading Broxburn-based beef processor AK Stoddart. AK Stoddart challenged teams of S2 students from the Academy to produce a new Scotch Beef burger to be part of their product range. The pupils had to conduct market research, develop the product, design packaging and create a marketing campaign to promote the new product.
AK Stoddart produced the winning burger (JCJ Burger) created by Jade Walker and Jennifer Houston, which is a Canadian themed product with bacon and maple syrup. The company also worked with their printing partners to produce labels for the packs utilising the designs that the girls created. The burger was then used to raise just over £200 for local charity Home-Start West Lothian at TESCO in Bathgate.
Jade and Jennifer worked hard to create in-store promotional material and encouraged shoppers to make a donation to charity in exchange for taking the products home.
The partnership aims to help pupils develop business skills, learn about the many exciting careers available in the Scottish food and drink industry and how the subjects they learn in school relate to the real world of work. It was set up by SFDF as part of its 'A Future in Food' national Schools Programme and is supported by Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) and TESCO.
Moira Stalker, SFDF Schools Programme Coordinator, said: “There are so many job opportunities available in the food and drink industry, including; science, product development, engineering, marketing, nutrition and design. This project is a great way to get local children thinking about how their food is produced and how that relates to the many exciting jobs on offer.”
Lucy Husband, Sales & Marketing Director, AK Stoddart, said: “Working with S2 at Bathgate Academy has resulted in the production of a really inventive Canadian themed Scotch Beef burger. We were very impressed with all the submissions; the groups worked really hard to create innovative recipes and campaigns. The pupils have been involved in every stage of the production of their burgers and showed flair and imagination, whilst also coming up with a commercial campaign. It's a fantastic outcome for Jade and Jennifer to have their winning recipe showcased in their local Tesco, whilst raising money for their chosen charity.”
Emma Aitken, Home Economics Teacher at Bathgate Academy, said: “The Make It with Meat challenge is an exciting learning experience for our pupils to learn about the farm to fork process. It is teaching pupils where the meat they eat comes from, how it is processed and then developed into a consumable product. The challenge also provides pupils with an insight into the different jobs and skills required in the food industry. Our S2 pupils have enjoyed this challenge and they created some innovative flavour combinations. We are delighted that AK Stoddart has produced the burgers for this event.”
