The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

"Today, we mourn the loss of Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and of La Francophonie.

"Mr. Boutros-Ghali led the United Nations during a tumultuous period in history as the world grappled with major crises in Rwanda, Somalia, and former Yugoslavia. He was a champion for world peace, and charted a path for the United Nations focused on conflict prevention, peacemaking, and peacekeeping. As the first Secretary-General of La Francophonie, he promoted the French language and culture in the world.

"Mr. Boutros-Ghali's legacy includes the major role he had in the successful negotiation of the1979 Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel, as well as his ground-breaking report 'An Agenda for Peace'.

"On behalf of all Canadians, we extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Boutros-Ghali's family, friends, and colleagues."
