The Solve panel on OpenStack cloud agility was led by Lauren Nelson, senior IaaS cloud analyst at Forrester, and included Darrin Hanson, vice president and general manager of Rackspace Private Cloud OpenStack Solutions and Radhesh Balakrishnan, general manager for OpenStack at Red Hat. The group discussed the "3 Steps to Achieve Business Agility with OpenStack Clouds."

This session explored the lessons learned by OpenStack adopters and how PLUMgrid and its partners deliver the components necessary to ensure success with the leading open source cloud technology. Following are questions and answers between Nelson and Lang from the event.

Q: PLUMgrid, Rackspace, and Red Hat are partnering to offer OpenStack solutions. Why is this partnership important and what does it offer to your customers?

A: OpenStack networking requires secure multi-tenancy, scalable network functions, and proper operational tools. Today, Rackspace announced a key partnership with Red Hat. When combined with Rackspace's recent integration and reseller agreements with PLUMgrid to help enterprises and service providers operationalize their OpenStack clouds and our previous integration work with Red Hat, our three firms provide best-in-class production solutions to create a standard platform we can all use to build open, reliable and massively scalable clouds.

Q: How are enterprises achieving business agility with OpenStack clouds? Could you share some customer examples?

A: For Red Hat and PLUMgrid, we have several customers that have told us that they were able to shorten network provisioning time from months to minutes including Swisscom.

Q: There is a lingering belief that OpenStack is not ready for prime time due to reasons such as complexity, lack of skills/talent, operational tools, etc. How does the combined solution from the companies help address the complexity concerns?

A: PLUMgrid certifies our SDN software with each version of Red Hat OSP. PLUMgrid developed an SDN visualization and monitoring platform called CloudApex that speeds up network deployment, simplifies everyday operations at scale and minimizes production downtime. And in terms of skill and talent, in the past six months more than 1,200 Virtualized Network Experts have been formally certified as part of the rigorous PLUMgrid University training program for OpenStack.
