Co-Owner Kevin DeLucenay, now 5 years in remission from esophageal cancer, started a battle for his life back in 2010. It was a pivotal time for Kevin and Smokey's Daylilies. After acquiring a large farm of daylilies in Illinois, the company was tasked with moving hundreds of thousands of plants back to Indiana.

Kevin battled low survival rate and debilitating effects from the esophagectomy while trying to grow the company. Without the help of online resources, research, and statistics, as well as the sheer will to survive, he might not be alive today. Kevin has stated that he hopes to spread the word about the importance of patients taking an active role in researching and understanding their own health options. He intends to raise funds to help the American Cancer Society give people the knowledge they need to make important decisions that can have a deep impact on their own health and survivability.

As Kevin notes about his own experience with cancer, “I chose to receive surgery at the Mayo clinic after researching survivability rates of patients by hospital for my surgery. I recognized my chances of surviving were much higher there.”

Kevin added that it was this life changing and eye opening experience that has compelled him to help raise awareness by raising funds through the sale of daylilies. 50% of all daylily collection sales from now through the month of December, 2015 will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
