Rare Opportunity for Clemson Means Greater Demand for Orange Bowl Tickets than Cotton Bowl Tickets

This year's Orange Bowl, which pits the Clemson Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners in one of the semifinal games, currently has an average selling price of $298 per ticket on the TicketNetwork.com marketplace* or nearly 14% higher than last year's game (Oregon vs Florida State at the Rose Bowl $258). Meanwhile, the Cotton Bowl between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan State Spartans is selling at $249 on average, or nearly 45% lower than Alabama's semi-final game at the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State last year ($445).

One of the reasons for the Cotton Bowl's worse fortunes may be the location. Neither school involved has an easy trip to Arlington, TX, from their respective campuses. Unlike Alabama's 5 hour drive to New Orleans last year, The University of Alabama is a 10 hour drive from AT&T Stadium, and Michigan State is located on the other side of the country. Flights from Michigan to Arlington will run you more than $900 per airline ticket, according to Priceline.com.

In contrast, Clemson University and the University of Oklahoma also have to trek a great deal of distance to get to their respective bowl site. Clemson University is a 10 hour drive from Sun Life Stadium, while the University of Oklahoma is over 1,400 miles away. Airline tickets from Oklahoma to Miami will cost over $900 as well.

The rare opportunity for Clemson means greater demand for Orange Bowl tickets. Ticket prices for the Orange Bowl are 16% higher on average than its Cotton Bowl counterpart despite having comparable traveling distances and expenses. The get in price for the Orange Bowl is $146, 17% higher than the Cotton Bowl. Clemson has not won or even participated in a national championship game since 1981. In addition, Oklahoma has not won a national championship in 15 years, a long time for a team that has won 7 titles in school history. On the other hand, Alabama has won a national championship in 3 of the last 5 years. Greater interest from Clemson and Oklahoma fans is driving up Orange Bowl ticket prices.

What to Expect for the College Football Championship in Glendale, AZ

The new College Football Championship Game demonstrated to be a worthy format. Last year saw the #4 seed, Ohio State win the national championship, justifying the need for a playoff system.

Like the semi-finals though, proximity to the potential schools playing in the game could play a factor. Last year's championship was centrally located in Arlington, TX. This year's championship game will be played in Glendale, AZ at the University of Phoenix Stadium, a 15 hour drive from the nearest campus (Oklahoma).

While one might expect that the uncertainty of who will be playing in the championship game would give fans pause before purchasing tickets, the excitement over the new playoff system has actually helped grow demand. Currently, demand is high with ticket listing prices ranging from $810 to $5,523 and VIP packages ranging from $1,130 to $17,872.
