Invented by Australian scientist and entrepreneur Ash Newland, The Scrubba Wash Pack is a travel day pack that weighs only 10oz and doubles as an electricity-free washing machine. The Scrubba Wash Pack is available as a result of a successful crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo that raised more than $20,000. Newland opted to use crowdfunding after his 2012 campaign which helped introduce the original Scrubba Wash Bag to the marketplace. In addition to raising the money to make the product, it helped build an engaged, passionate community around the product. More than 70,000 Scrubba Wash Bags have been sold since launch, and Newland is looking forward to even more success from the Scrubba Wash Pack.
"People love our original Scrubba Wash Bag, but it often just sits in a backpack or suitcase between washes," said Newland. "We invented the Scrubba Wash Pack so we would have a product that was multi-functional. Most travellers pack a day pack already, so why not pack a lightweight one that is versatile, weatherproof and can also wash your clothes?"
Washing with the Scrubba Wash Pack requires no electricity and minimal water. Travelers put their dirty clothes in the pack, add water and cleaning liquid, seal the pack and rub the clothes against the hundreds of "nobules" inside. The nobules function just like a flexible washboard in an enclosed waterproof bag, and in three minutes, you have a machine-quality wash. Users then rinse the soap from the bag and hang the clothes to dry.
It took 18 months and several prototypes for Newland to develop the Scrubba Wash Pack. The adjustable straps allow users to wear it as a backpack or a messenger-style sling bag. Pockets on shoulder and waist straps make items (such as your passport or phone) easy to access, and the abrasion-resistant base and back panel make it durable for adventure.
Giving back has been an integral part of the Calibre8 business model since its 2012 launch. So far, Newland has donated $35,000 towards funding wells in Ethiopia and Bangladesh. Continuing in that spirit, Newland has earmarked a portion of the funds raised during the Indiegogo campaign to help build a well in Ethiopia. "We believe accessibility to fresh water is a fundamental human right shared by all," Newland said.
