DOE Extends Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project Contract
Idaho Falls, ID - The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) today announced it is extending its contract for the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project at the Idaho Site for a period of 6 months. The contract period for the current contractor, Idaho Treatment Group (ITG), had been scheduled to expire on September 30, 2015.
Today’s contract extension, valued at approximately $65 million, is intended to accommodate DOE’s competitive procurement process for the new Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP) Core contract. This action will allow for award of the new ICP Core contract and transition to the new contract to occur without interruptions of ongoing environmental cleanup activities. This extension will help ensure that the government receives the highest return on investment for its environmental restoration work.
Under the contract extension ITG will continue to safely and compliantly:
- Characterize, certify, package and store transuranic waste offsite disposal
- Disposition mixed low-level waste at an appropriate treatment and/or disposal facility
- Retrieve stored waste from the Transuranic Storage Area-Retrieval Enclosure.
The Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project contract was awarded to ITG in October, 2011.
The mission of EM is to complete the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy brought about from five decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.
