Coveney Hosts First Meeting of the High Level Implementation Committee for Food Wise 2025; Announces Continued Funding of Agricultural Catchment Programme
Minister Simon Coveney TD today chaired the first meeting of the High Level Implementation Committee for Food Wise 2025. The committee includes senior executives from Bord Bia, Teagasc, Enterprise Ireland, BIM and the EPA, as well as senior officials from relevant Government Departments.
Minister Coveney stated: ‘I am delighted to commence the implementation of Food Wise 2025 with all the relevant State Agencies, Government Departments and the industry. I am committed to putting in place a robust implementation process to progress this smart, sustainable growth strategy.’
Today’s meeting discussed priorities and process for implementation of the Food Wise strategy. Implementation will be influenced by the final Environmental Report of the strategy. “As the Food Wise report states, environmental protection and economic competitiveness are equal and complementary: one cannot be achieved at the expense of the other” Minister Coveney said, “therefore sustainability will be at the core of the strategy’s implementation”.
In related news, the Minister also announced continued funding of the Agricultural Catchment Programme for a further four years. This research programme, operated by Teagasc, intensively monitors the effectiveness of measures introduced to reduce the loss of nutrients from agriculture to water.
‘I am delighted to commit to a further four years of this innovative and intensive programme which is a key action in implementing the sustainability commitments of the Food Wise 2025 strategy. This programme is providing scientific-based knowledge that can verify that Irish farmers are producing milk, meat and crops in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner’, the Minister added.
