Europe and Eurasia: Remarks With Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic

SECRETARY KERRY: So let me – it’s my great pleasure to welcome the prime minister of Serbia, Minister Vucic, and have an opportunity first of all to thank him for the tremendous efforts that he and others are making with respect to the migrant crisis all across Eastern Europe and into Europe. And of course, we also applaud the transition that has been taking place under the 2013 agreement with Europe with respect to Serbia and Kosovo. There’s work yet to be done, as the prime minister knows, but I think he and others are taking this challenge head on and it’s very important.

We also intend to talk about developing the economic and energy relationships. These are critical components of any independent country in that region, and we recognize there are always pressures from various neighbors, but nevertheless, we are welcoming this strong desire that the prime minister has and his country has to strengthen the relationship with Europe, with the United States, in a balanced and thoughtful way, and I welcome him here today. Thank you.

PRIME MINISTER VUCIC: Thank you very much. Thank you very much.

SECRETARY KERRY: You want to say anything?

PRIME MINISTER VUCIC: Yeah. First of all, I’m profoundly grateful to the Secretary of State for receiving us here and I wanted to say that we do expect your support in our future path, and once again, many thanks for praising us on our difficult and harsh work regarding migrant crisis, and I think that we delivered a lot and we acted in accordance with European values, not only in accordance with European regulations. And I hope that we’ll also have enough time to discuss all important bilateral issues and to – we would like to see Serbia as a small but reliable partner of U.S. in the future. Thank you once again for having us here.

SECRETARY KERRY: My pleasure. You’re welcome.
