Western Hemisphere: Counselor Shannon to Travel to Central America
Ambassador Thomas A. Shannon, Counselor of the Department of State, will lead a U.S. interagency delegation, including representatives from the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice, to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, July 6-10, 2015.
Ambassador Shannon will discuss efforts in support of planning related to the U.S. Strategy for Engagement in Central America. Ambassador Shannon will also meet with senior government officials in each of the three countries to discuss issued related to security, governance, and economic prosperity.
This trip will provide an opportunity for follow up on President Obama’s meeting with his counterparts from these three countries in July 2014; Secretary Kerry’s meeting with the foreign ministers of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras at the UN General Assembly in September 2014; and Vice President Biden’s meeting with the presidents of these three countries in November 2014, travel to Guatemala in March, and meeting with the President of Honduras in June.
