Tuna on Toast, Remember the 1970s

PORTLAND, OREGON, UNITED STATES, April 10, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Bell bottom pants, school dress codes, Richard Nixon and Pringles . . . Sherri Bobzien grew up in the 1970s – only Pringles never made it into the family snack cupboard. Sherri was born in the 1960s, and was the sixth out of seven children. She remembers taking potted meat on brown bread sandwiches as a school lunch, being taught by Sister Clotildis (that was her real name), and target practice in her father’s basement – using a magazine cover displaying Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon as a target.

Sherri Bobzien would like to share her experiences growing up in a large, Catholic family in the 1970s by publishing her completed manuscript, Tuna on Toast, Sister Clotildis, UFOs and Other Things I Survived: Growing up in the ‘70’s in Portland. Even if you weren’t around for sit-ins, peace symbols, and the “hospitals are for when you are dying” era of childhood, even the short excerpts from the book read like a trip in a time machine. It might not have been a simpler age, but it certainly was less complicated by political correctness and the “positive reinforcement” style of parenting.

Sherri’s memories are not all just humorous views of the daily grind in a large family. She also remembers meeting the Brady Bunch – and getting autographs – getting picked to ride an elephant at the circus, her brother creating an impromptu UFO (don’t try this at home – it might set the neighborhood on fire) and more.
If you remember the 1970’s with nostalgia or if you wonder what life was like for your parents, Tuna on Toast is a “must read.” Even the Kickstarter Crowdfunding Campaign (selected as a Kickstarter “Staff Pick”) exudes humor – including the section on rewards! These include – at every level, starting at $2.00 – a bookmark. The bookmark becomes a clever mantra threading through every subsequent level of contribution possible. Yep, no matter what, you will get the bookmark if you make a contribution. Subsequent levels of reward include an ebook copy of Tuna on Toast, a bound copy of the book, photocopies of the Brady Bunch autographs, copies of a bullet-riddled magazine cover featuring Richard Nixon (the bullet holes are genuine), a do-it-yourself UFO kit (don’t set your neighborhood on fire), and if you live in the Portland area, an author visit to your book club. And you certainly get the bookmark.

If the book reads anything like the crowdfunding campaign blurb, you will laugh, giggle and maybe even cry a little at the account of a little girl growing up in a big family. She even got left at home once because it is hard to keep track of that many kids. At the very least, it will document one person’s experiences in a decade that had a little of everything – post-Vietnam social changes, women’s liberation, changing styles in expectations of parents and more. It is a slice of life from an era that is now nearly two generations ago for some of us who were young adults at that time.

Sherri Bobzien is self-publishing Tuna on Toast. The money from the crowdfunding campaign will go toward editing, layout, design, binding, and marketing the book. Sherri says she never imagined all the things that go into publishing a book, but she wants her book to look as good as any book from a major publisher. The target date for publication (and for the Kickstarter rewards to go out) is October 20, 2015.

Whether this book will be a trip down memory lane or an education about your parents’ or grandparents’ youth, this is one you don’t want to miss. Even the bookmark looks like it will be fun. After all, when was the last time you had tuna on toast? (Hmmm…wonder what’s for lunch…)
It looks like a good read, in all events. If you cannot come up with as little as the $2.00 for the bookmark, then let other people know about this memoir. Even your public librarian might be interested in reserving a copy for your public library – it looks as if it is going to be that good.
