MORE ART PRESENTS: BORROWED LIGHT by Sari Carel
A sculpture and sound installation with community-driven workshops and performances in Sunset Park, Brooklyn lasting from May through Sept 2015
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, March 12, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- More Art is producing Borrowed Light, a sculpture and sound installation, for the vibrant Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, lasting from May through September 2015. Sunset Park is a culturally diverse community composed of diverse residents representing a myriad of global cultures. The neighborhood is named for its park, which is embedded in the community and is a much-needed source of green space for the heavily industrialized area. More Art hopes to echo the rich mix of cultures and unique flora and fauna of Sunset Park in Borrowed Light, a sound and sculptural installation by the artist Sari Carel in collaboration with More Art.Carel worked with Sunset Park’s stewards to gather sounds produced by the park's local fauna; these collected field recordings will create a richly layered sound collage embedded within the sculptural installation. The park's visitors will be invited to engage with both sound and sculpture over the course of the summer.
Together with the artist, More Art has also developed a series of related community workshops and performances to accompany the project. Borrowed Light will help to preserve the sights and sounds that are currently part of Sunset Park. In spite of the area’s rich history, it could be subject to the same type of gentrification that has been seen in other areas.
Borrowed Light will effectively set the stage for locals, individuals and organizations alike, to celebrate their heritage and express their opinions on local and citywide issues affecting them. The forum will be open for these groups to hold workshops, performances, talks, and gatherings, with the possibilities for the space being endless. In addition, More Art has partnered with several local organizations PS 169, Turning Point Educational Center, and the Sunset Park Recreation Center, to develop outreach programs for neighborhood children and other interested community members. These summer activities will introduce students to means of encountering Sunset Park via arts, music, and nature: emphasis will be on the fostering creativity and awareness of the park's impact on the community.
Join us! More Art is sponsoring a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help with financing Borrowed Light's production. In addition to supporting vital community arts programming, unique rewards for pledges include credit mention, T-shirts and, starting at the $150 level, a limited-edition Sari Carel art print. The first 3 contributors at the $1000 level will receive an
original, signed and hand-drawn Sari Carel piece evoking Borrowed Light.
Other rewards will include preview tours, an invitation to a limited-entry VIP cocktail reception, a downloadable file of the naturesounds composition, a special tour of the artist’s studio, and an exclusive three course dinner with Carel, More Art’s Executive Director Micaela Martegani, and the other patrons. The project is well underway: recordings have been made, plans for the sculptures are complete, and the technical drawings are getting a final polish. Your contributions will go toward practical expenses that will be encountered along the way and you can join us in May for the launch of our first successful public art installation outside of Manhattan here in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York!
