Shortage of skilled cyber security professionals a major worry for India

As business booms, Indian organisations have a significant lack of skilled cyber security professionals to secure sensitive corporate information.

NEW DELHI, INDIA, January 29, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook report states that India will be the fastest growing major emerging economy in the world by 2016. But as business booms, Indian organisations have a significant lack of skilled cyber security professionals to secure sensitive corporate information.

According to ISACA’s 2015 Global Cybersecurity Status Report - India, 87% of respondents believe there is a shortage of skilled cyber security professionals and 76% agree it is difficult to identify who has an adequate level of skills and knowledge when hiring new graduates for entry-level cyber security positions.

“The lack of skilled cyber security professionals is worrying, especially as Indian organisations have a legal obligation to look after sensitive data” says Alan Calder, founder and executive chairman of IT Governance.

The IT Act 2008 requires all Indian organisations to implement and maintain reasonable security practices and procedures to protect sensitive personal data or information. Valid practices to protect this information can be found in international standards such as ISO 27001. Indian organisations are liable for breaches, must pay compensation to affected parties, and offences can incur prison sentences and fines of up to one lakh rupees.

“With the growing threat of cyber attack, a significant increase in high-profile data breaches and an increased awareness of cyber crime, organisations throughout India will need to significantly bolster their cyber security posture if they are to stay afloat in the next two to three years,” Calder continues.

ISO 27001 is increasingly recognised as the go-to information security standard for cyber security best practice. According to the ISO Survey 2013, there are now 1,931 certifications to the Standard throughout India, which is up 16% on the previous year.
