The concept for Sweety Onion began when one of Leigh Sweetyonion’s friends asked her to create a character for an upcoming onion festival. After some consideration the idea for Sweety was born and sweet onions just became a whole lot more colorful. The story has it that in October 1997, all of the onions from Kula Maui got together to witness the birth of one of the sweetest onions around. This birth reminded all of the onions of how sweet and precious life could be so they came up with the name Sweety. The name stuck and Sweety’s fun loving personality suits his name very well. Sweety brings a zest for life in all of his adventures and throughout his book as he travels from upcountry Kula to the blue ocean of Kihei.

Sweety lives on the island of Maui in Hawaii. His favorite hand sign is known in the islands of Hawaii as a shaka. The shaka sign means both aloha and hang loose. This is the perfect symbol for a character that loves life as much as Sweety does. Sweety is the embodiment of creative self-expression and the sense of togetherness and love which Hawaii is known for. Sweety also loves freedom. In this way Sweety encourages all of us to embrace our inner child and peel away the many layers of life’s adventures.

The dream for this children’s book started nearly 20 years ago in 1996. Now that the writing has been completed that dream is almost a reality. The book will be made available on CreateSpace and retail online. Merchandising is a very important part of the Sweety Onion brand and there is already a Sweety Onion online store for plush figures on their website sweetyonion.com. However many stuffed animal companies are not interested in producing small quantities. While it is possible to compromise with some manufacturers, funding is vital to creating inventory and growing the Sweety Onion brand.
