Vermont's Largest City Invests in 100% Renewable Resources
October 2014 - With the Burlington Electric Department's (BED) purchase of a 7.4 MW hydroelectric project, Burlington, Vermont's largest city, now has contracts to source 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. BED currently sells the renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the facilities and uses the funds to lower customer electricity rates. Electricity generated from biomass, wind, and hydropower provides power for the city's 42,000 residents.
Burlington's effort contributes to Vermont's target to produce 90 percent of its energy from renewable resources by 2050.
