Cyber security awareness rises in Southern Africa

All organisations operating in the Southern Africa region have an increasing legal and moral obligation to protect the personal information they process.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, October 29, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The introduction of data privacy legislation in Africa is gathering momentum: eight countries have now enacted laws or have prepared draft bills that aim to protect the personal information and privacy of individuals – including South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act and Mauritius’s Data Protection Act (MU DPA). Earlier this month, Zambia held the first ever cyber drill for Africa, which attracted representatives from 18 countries.

All organisations operating in the Southern Africa region, whatever their size, sector or location, have an increasing legal as well as moral obligation to protect the personal information they process.

IT Governance Ltd, the global provider of cyber security expertise, says they can help meet their legal obligations by implementing an information security management system (ISMS), as set out in the international best-practice standard ISO27001.

Alan Calder, founder and executive chairman of IT Governance, says: “All organisations in the Southern Africa region should implement an ISO27001-compliant ISMS. Not only does an ISMS enable you to meet your data protection obligations, it is the best way of minimising the risk of a data breach and protecting your profits. In the case of South Africa’s POPI, the penalty for non-compliance can be up to R10 million. Organisations cannot afford to be cyber insecure.”

Calder continues: “An ISMS provides a holistic approach to information security management that addresses the whole enterprise, and accredited certification to the Standard offers globally acknowledged proof that information security best practice has been adopted. IT Governance’s ISO27001 Get A Lot Of Help package makes it easy for organisations in the Southern Africa region to implement ISO27001.”

The Get A Lot Of Help package contains tried and tested and highly experienced consultancy support, guidance and project management. This helps organisations get the best out of an integrated set of tools and services that, between them, enable them to achieve guaranteed ISO27001-certification readiness.
