But their Do-It-Yourself zeal and self-funding can only take The OverDrive so far. In order to complete the full scale prototype, crowdfunding needs to raise $250,000 by August 27. If funds in excess of the goal are donated, the next step will be to improve the prototype quality, speed up the construction process, fund the touring of the finished vehicle, and begin FAA and NHTSA certification. The ultimate goal, of course, is mass production.

LaBiche and his team estimate that it will take another two years to finish the prototype. But when you consider that for them, it’s been 20 years in the making, you see that the finish line is in sight. When the prototype is completed, it will conform to consumer marketing expectations of what a car should look like, with a significant difference: when The OverDrive takes off, it really takes off. All the hidden compartments and folding storage are cleverly designed so that the car looks like a car with sophisticated styling on the highway. With a 450 horsepower, supercharged engine, the car isn’t sacrificing any power or speed. But when it’s time to spread its wings and fly, that engine propels it to over 275 miles per hour, making it the “fastest car in the world” that is street legal. Its welded space-frame chassis gives it both strength and light weight, with a body that’s a composite of fiberglass and carbon fiber, and wings made of a composite and metal structure mixture. When its Corvette LS-2 engine is running in airplane mode, it uses a partial drive train mounted to a custom gearbox. How does it go from automobile to airplane? With the push of a button. How much easier can it be?
