WHO'S RACING:

Tudor United SportsCar Challenge (P, PC, GTD GTLM) – June 29, 2014

Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge – June 28, 2014

TRACK:

Watkins Glen International - 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course

LENGTH:

Tudor Championship - 6-hour endurance race

(Third leg of the North American Endurance Championship)

Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series – 2.5 hour time limit

TIRE SETS:

  • Tudor Championship -P teams will be allowed 15 sets of tires for the 6 Hour race (including dry and wet tires); PC teams, 10 sets; and GTD teams will receive 12 sets.
  • There is no set limit for the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

WHICH TIRE ARE THEY USING:

**Continental Tire has designated, Blacks, as the dry tire to be raced at all stadium road courses in 2014. If teams move to wet tires, the P and PC classes will remain on Blacks, while the GTD class will be on, Golds.

P Golds – the same tire compound used at Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Indy.

Delta Wing Blacks – because it's the only car on this configuration, it will race on, Blacks, year round.

PC Golds – the same tire compound used at Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Indy.

GTD Blacks – the same tire compound used at Sebring, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Watkins Glen, Mosport, Road America, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta.

CTSCC – this tire compound will be used at all other tracks this year.

PIT WINDOW:

A fuel stint for the P class is approximately 40 minutes. Some teams may double once the sun goes down and the track temps cool off.

TRACK CHARACTERISTICS:

There are six main areas identified in the long track at Watkins Glen International – the ninety (turn 1), the esses (turns 2-4), the back straight, the chute (turn 6), the toe (turn 7), and the boot (turn 8). It’s typically a fast track that requires a lot of focus. Updates to the DP-style Prototype car will increase g-forces on the drivers through the corners so you will see many teams with three drivers.

FYI:

  • How Many? - Continental Tire will bring approximately 3,700 tires to Watkins Glen to accommodate two series and a total of 9.5 hours of racing.
  • ZR1 Corvette vs. Daytona Prototype - When comparing a ZR1 Corvette to a DP Corvette, there is approximately 22% more vertical load on the outside rear tire of a DP car versus the ZR1 Corvette (not factoring in aero, banking load, etc. which is different at each track). However, the biggest difference is that the ZR1 Corvette sees a “peak load” on its tires very rarely while a DP Corvette will see a “peak load” about 75% of the time during every lap at Watkins Glen.
  • World Cup! - The world is watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup including drivers like Ozz Negri and Memo Rojas who had a friendly little bet on the Brazil vs. Mexico game, as well as so many of us standing behind US Soccer as they tackle the death bracket. But did you know, Continental designed a special tire to withstand the wear and tear of Brazilian roads to get all 32 World Cup teams to and from their games safely? The third-generation ContiGol Urbano even sports soccerballs and the FIFA World Cup logo on the side wall.
  • Arrested on Hot Rod Power Tour - Okay, not really, but correspondent, Ryan Eversley, was placed in handcuffs on two separate days during the 2014 Hot Rod Power Tour as he embarked on the six day journey following his podium finish at Kansas. Eversley’s keen observations, quick wit and sense of adventure provided a colorful Twitter frenzy, June 8-13. Eversley’s whips for the week included a Lingenfelter Vista Cruiser, Lingenfelter Corvette and a Petty’s Garage Dodge Challenger. In over 200 Tweets, Eversley captured, burnouts, burgers too big for your mouth, classic cars, kin to the OJ Simpson Bronco, and a Jordan Taylor look-a-like.
