American Lung Association Applauds Court Decision to Uphold Particle Pollution Standard

Statement by Janice Nolen, Assistant Vice President, National Policy

Washington, D.C. (May 9, 2014)

Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the national air quality standard for particle pollution, sometimes called soot, set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2012. Upholding the standard means that millions of Americans are protected from one of the nation's most widespread and lethal pollutants. The Court agreed that EPA's decision was solid, based in the overwhelming scientific evidence drawn from studies conducted in cities across the nation over two decades. The American Lung Association intervened in this case because we strongly supported EPA's decision to set the most protective standard to save lives and prevent lung disease, including lung cancer.
