American Heart Association Applauds FDA Removal of Four Tobacco Products
(NewMediaWire) - February 21, 2014 - Washington, D.C. - American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown issued the following comments today on the Food and Drug Administration’s order to stop the sale and distribution of four tobacco products:
“We join all Americans concerned about the health of this country in celebrating today’s historic step by the FDA. The agency’s first action to remove products from the market under the Tobacco Control Act is an impressive one. We are encouraged by the ban on four brands of bidis cigarettes and we believe it sends a strong message that the FDA is willing to take on the big business of tobacco.
The American Heart Association hopes this is a preview of more aggressive enforcement efforts by the agency. Because this and more bold efforts from the FDA will save millions of Americans from heart disease and stroke, not to mention the many other health problems caused by tobacco use.
We especially look forward to the long-awaited release of the rule that will update the list of products the FDA can regulate.”
