Colorado Climber to Attempt Long's Peak North Face in Life-saving Effort for Children in Myanmar

DENVER, CO, USA, September 2, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Denver resident Dave Revere will attempt to summit the north face of Long's Peak on Sept. 15 in a challenge to raise enough money to purchase life-saving vaccinations for displaced children in Myanmar who are at high risk for disease.— Dave Revere
Denver resident Dave Revere will attempt to summit the north face of Long's Peak on Sept. 15 in a challenge to raise enough money to purchase life-saving vaccinations for displaced children in Myanmar who are at high risk for disease. The avid climber is a volunteer with the Mon National Health Committee (MNHC), the only organization currently providing health care services to internally displaced Mon peoples. His efforts on behalf of these children were recognized with a $2,000 American Express Passion Project grand prize in August and have inspired a benefit concert to be held in Fort Worth, Texas on Oct. 10.
Revere assisted MNHC in its vaccination outreach for approximately 3,000 children under five in internally displaced Mon communities from October 2012 through February 2013.
“I lived with families who lost loved ones to easily-preventable diseases,” said Revere. “I saw children suffering needlessly from malaria. These people are strong and beautiful, but their living conditions are the poorest you can imagine. When an outbreak occurs, it spreads like wildfire. Vaccinations are not just a good idea here in the jungle. They're often the difference between life and death.”
Revere said he saw funding fall short for the four-year-old program's 2013 vaccination schedule. MNHC is a Thailand-based nonprofit that has no access to large grants and relies entirely on donations, according to the climber.
“That's why I'm doing this,” said Revere. “I can't administer vaccinations. I can't oversee a health-outreach program. What I can do is climb.”
Revere said he's climbed some of the most beautiful rocks in Southeast Asia, but he's looking forward to returning to the alpine heights of the Rocky Mountains.
“I feel like I belong to the Rockies,” Revere said. “But I belong to these kids, too, so here's a chance for my passion and purpose to meet.”
The Colorado Mountain School has partnered with Revere by preparing him for the north face, guiding him on the day of the attempt and donating all the gear for his climb.
“Dave Revere is climbing Long's Peak with us for a very cool cause,” said Jane Anderson, Expedition Manager at CMS. “We are excited to be a part of this and looking forward to our summit attempt.”
“I need partners like CMS,” said Revere. “Because the bottom line is that these children will be at a much higher risk to these killer diseases if we aren't able to raise enough funds to complete 2014's vaccination schedule. There isn't a big grant coming in. There's this fund raising effort. That's it.”
Revere is asking people to share ownership in this life-saving program by purchasing elevation on his climb for $1 per foot. He said it's an invitation for others to connect themselves to the children in this unreached corner of the world. He's also designing a bandana with the names of all his donors to bring them in spirit as he climbs.
“One foot of my climb can buy one diphtheria or tuberculosis vaccine,” said Revere. “A buck nearly covers two polio or tetanus vaccines.”
