Michigan State University (MSU) has begun operating a new anaerobic digester to generate electricity for the campus. The system will generate 2.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year; 20% of the electricity will power the digester and the farm where it is located, the remaining electricity will be used on campus. The digester will be fueled by food waste from campus dining facilities, animal waste from the farm, grease from local restaurants, and fruits and vegetables from a local Meijer distribution center. 17,000 tons of waste will be put into the digester annually, helping MSU reduce its need for waste disposal. This is MSU's second anaerobic digester; the first project was much smaller and is used for research purposes.
