Assess the environmental impact of shale gas exploration at SMi's 4th Shale Gas Environmental Summit

SMi Group's 4th Shale Gas Environmental Summit will address the latest environmental, technical and regulatory issues affecting shale gas exploration.

LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, August 26, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Shale gas promises to be as significant to Britain’s prosperity as North Sea oil. Fracking the Bowland Shale alone will produce the equivalent of 90 years of North Sea gas production. Furthermore, Sussex is reported to be sitting on one of the biggest pools of shale gas in the world according to a leading study. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) and Advanced Research International’s (ARI) World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment has revealed the Weald basin holds 700 million barrels of shale oil.

Although Britain is approximately ten years behind the United States in shale exploration, the benefits may be greater than the in US, as Britain relies more on imported oil and gas, and therefore suffer more from volatile prices. Following on from this, an attractive tax regime and a streamlined regulatory process for shale exploration have now been put in place by the UK Government.

It is against this backdrop that SMi's timely 4th Shale Gas Environmental Summit, taking place on 29-30 October in London, will assess the environmental impact of shale gas exploration, improve sustainability and ultimately maximise this abundant resource's commercial potential. The two-day event will feature presentations from senior industry figures addressing:
• The myths from the facts surrounding pollution and seismic activity
• Navigation through the regulatory landscape currently in place and the evolution of policy for better legislation
• Evaluation of technology advances in environmentally sustainable hydraulic fracturing solutions
• Analysis of public-private awareness and engagement initiatives
• Discussion on environmental risk management
• The reality of shale gas as an economically viable alternative to meet the UK and Europe’s increasing energy consumption
