Former Head of CNN Worldwide to Appear at ABA Communications Law Meeting
WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 4, 2013 — Mark Whitaker, who recently resigned as the former executive vice president and managing editor of CNN Worldwide, will give the keynote address and discuss the future of the news industry during the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law 18th Annual Conference on Feb. 9 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort Spa in Dana Point, Calif.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the landmark Hustler Magazine v. Falwell decision, Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler Magazine, will discuss how that case proceeded to the Supreme Court and has protected the speech of parodists and comedians in the plenary session, “The Reverend, His Mother and Their Outhouse.” Also, a panel of the nation’s top political reporters and columnists, including NBC News’ Chuck Todd, USA Today’s Susan Page, and The New York Times’ media critic Bill Carter, will discuss how the press covered the 2012 presidential campaigns. Also participating in this discussion will be Erik Smith, a political consultant who worked for President Obama’s campaign.
The annual conference will be held Feb. 7 – 9. Concurrent workshops on hot issues in libel and privacy, newsgathering, the Internet, entertainment, the FCC and advertising and promotions are among other topics also scheduled.
