Question: Secretary Kerry announced in his remarks today that the United States is doubling aid to UNHCR. What is this funding specifically for, and does it include any funding for Syria, either new or previously announced?
Answer: Today Secretary Kerry announced that the United States is providing an additional $415 million in funding to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in support of life-saving activities worldwide. This brings the United States total contribution for UNHCR’s global operations and emergency appeals for fiscal year 2013 to $890 million.
Of the $890 million, $289.3 million is supporting UNHCR’s work both in Syria and for Syrian refugees in the region. The portion for Syria had been previously announced.
