Mother’s Day @ your library

CHICAGO – The question of what to do or what gift to give on Mother’s Day can often be a bit perplexing for children and teens who might not have a lot of money to spend. Enter the library with fun and creative ideas for not only what to give, but how to spend quality time with mom.

Libraries across the country are celebrating these special ladies with a range of programs for children and teens. Below are just a few examples of how libraries are celebrating.

The Alviso Branch of the San Jose (Calif.) Public Library invites young library users to use their creative skills to make homemade cards as part of Mother’s Day Crafts @ your library. Participants will learn how to make pop-up cards or to see where their creativity takes them in designing their own.

The Branch District Library System of Branch County, Mich. in partnership with a local greenhouse, will host Mother’s Day @ your library. Each child who visits the library’s Kidsplace the day before Mother’s Day will receive a free plant to give as a gift, which they can then plant at home on Mother’s Day.

The Piscataway (N.J.) Public Library will host Mother’s Day Tea @ your library. This special story hour will be open to children 3 and older to attend with their mothers, grandmothers or caregivers and will feature songs and crafts, along with iced tea and cookies for the attendees.

The Watsonville (Calif.) Public Library will host Mother’s Day Crafts @ your library for tweens and teens. Using old and discarded books, tweens and teens will have the opportunity to create a bouquet of paper flowers.

The American Library Association’s Campaign for America’s Libraries (www.ala.org/@yourlibrary) is a public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians.
