U.S. Surgeon General Releases Statement on Asbestos
To mark the importance of National Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1 to 7), Dr. Regina Benjamin, the Surgeon General of the United States, issued a statement to the people of the U.S., stressing the dangers of asbestos exposure.
Benjamin began her statement by urging Americans to educate themselves about the dangers of the toxic mineral, explaining its natural occurrence in the environment and outlining its use in construction materials.
The Surgeon General also explained the risks of disturbing existing asbestos and outlined the major health concerns associated with the inhalation of fibers, which can occur when an individual encounters the friable form of the material. In addition, she cited those who should be most concerned about asbestos exposure and at high risk for developing diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
“Anyone who disturbs asbestos is at risk,” Benjamin wrote in her statement. “However, it is of special concern for construction, insulation, and demolition workers, pipefitters, boilermakers and others who might disturb asbestos found in old buildings or equipment as part of their work. The hazard is also very real to home handymen, first-responders, and community volunteers.”
Benjamin also cited a recent report released by several federal agencies outlining actions for keeping healthy and safe in American homes. The report, entitled Advancing Healthy Housing – A Strategy for Action, demonstrates the connection between housing conditions and the health of the residents inside those homes. It focuses on strategies to reduce or eliminate in-home health hazards, she noted.
“The greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects,” Benjamin said, in closing. “If you think you have been exposed to asbestos, I encourage you to speak to your health care professional.”
“Together, we can prevent the dangers associated with asbestos. We can create healthier homes, healthier workplaces and a healthier America.”
