Today, pupils from primary schools throughout North Lanarkshire will be feeling the heat as they present their healthy food and drink advertising campaigns to a panel of experts in the 'Dragon's Lair'.

The 'Junior Dragons' Lair Food and Drink Challenge' is based on the popular TV programme and aims to put pupils creative skills to the test. Participants to the Lair will have to present their designs for an innovative advertising campaign promoting a new healthy Scottish food or drink product paying particular attention to athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The purpose of the competition is to promote pupils' creativity whilst supporting delivery of the wider curriculum including Health and Wellbeing, Literacy and Numeracy across the Curriculum in addition to further enhancing skills for learning, life and work. The project also aims to raise awareness amongst young people of the skills required by employers in the Scottish food and drink industry and the various careers and job opportunities available in the sector.

The competition has been developed through a partnership of the Scottish Food and Drink Federation's (SFDF) 'A Future in Food' programme, North Lanarkshire Learning and Leisure Services, Motherwell College and food producers Warburtons and Muller Wiseman. Funding through the Scottish Government's Food Education Programme has helped in supporting the 'A Future in Food' programme.

The Scottish food and drink industry contributes over £9.5 billion per year to the economy and employs over 360,000 people from fishermen and farmers to food scientists and chefs. SFDF's A Future in Food national School's programme fosters mutually beneficial relationships between schools and the Scottish food and drink industry, helping teachers, pupils and parents better understand the sector and highlighting the wide variety of careers on offer.

Moira Stalker, SFDF Schools Programme Coordinator, said:

“We're incredibly excited to be working in partnership across Lanarkshire to get the Junior Dragons' Lair Challenge into local schools. Through working together, not only do pupils get to learn more about our industry, it also gets them thinking about how food is made and the many exciting careers the Scottish food industry has to offer.”

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:

“In Scotland we're fortunate to have access to one of the world's best natural larders – and that means that there's a wealth of food-related career opportunities for Scottish youngsters to consider.

“Good luck to all the Lanarkshire pupils who enter the Junior Dragons' Lair. I hope they enjoy the challenge as well as increasing their knowledge about food and where it comes from.”

Lesley McPhee, Curriculum Support Teacher (Enterprise), North Lanarkshire Council said:

"We are delighted to work together with SFDF and local businesses to facilitate innovative and exciting learning opportunities such as Junior Dragons' Lair. Our pupils have been encouraged to apply their knowledge of Health and Wellbeing and skills from a range of subjects across the curriculum to create and present an innovative marketing campaign.

“This experience encapsulates the spirit of 'A Curriculum for Excellence' by encouraging children to become Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. Working alongside business advisors from the food industry, the children have experienced first-hand, the skills required for Learning, Life and Work which forms an integral component of our curriculum through Building the Curriculum 4. Experiences such as these give our pupils a real context and purpose for their learning and I am looking forward to seeing the results of all their hard work at the final."
