Once again, company hopes to brighten soldiers' holidays

General Mills employees will again make the holidays a little brighter for soldiers serving overseas in areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan, through the “2011 Operation: Soldier Phone Home” campaign. 

For the sixth year, Operation: Soldier Phone Home is recruiting the volunteer efforts of employees, their family members and friends to add to the more than 90,000 greeting cards and 7,500 phone cards that have already been sent to soldiers in the past five years.

So far in this year's campaign, the effort has generated 29,000 greeting cards and $15,000. The event kicked offon Nov. 7 and continues through Nov. 30.

Operation: Soldier Phone Home was started in 2006 by a General Mills employee and Marine veteran as a way to connect soldiers with loved ones back home, knowing how difficult the holidays can be for soldiers when they’re far away from friends and family.

After a successful first year, the volunteer program was acknowledged with an internal award. Since then, the campaign has expanded to include General Mills plants and business centers throughout the United States.

Last year’s campaign shipped more than 28,000 cards and more than $11,000 in phone cards to seven different overseas locations.
