AMS Vans Sends Wheelchair Van to Rescue Florida Woman
/EINPresswire.com/ Atlanta-based handicap van company dispatches accessible van to transport wheelchair user and her family to their FL home
When AMS Vans owner Kip Crum heard the story of a woman and her family stranded in Florida after her wheelchair accessible van broke down, he dispatched a handicap van and driver from Atlanta, GA to Pensacola, FL to transport the family to their home 451 miles away in Daytona Beach, FL.
Carol Coons, who lost the use of her legs in a head-on car crash 30 years ago, and her son and daughter were on their way to celebrate her oldest daughter's leave from the Marine Corps when her handicap accessible van broke down. The engine blew and, according to Coons, was "deemed unrepairable." Coons, who uses a motorized wheelchair, had the van towed to her daughter's home, but they still had no way to get back to Daytona Beach, because her daughter's car was stolen the next morning.
After seeing the woman's story on a local Florida TV news station, an AMS Vans Facebook fan alerted the company, which has handicap vans for sale, to the situation. According to Kip Crum, "A vehicle breakdown is always much more difficult for a person with disabilities who uses a wheelchair, so when we received the information, we knew we could help get Mrs. Coons and her family home safely and comfortably. That's why we're in business."
The AMS driver met Mrs. Coons and her family at her daughter's home Thursday morning in one of the company's wheelchair vans and drove them to their Daytona Beach home. After the seven-hour drive, Mrs. Coons said, "Your company is a shining example of what "AMERICA" is supposed to be all about—people helping other people. I myself was raised to step up and lend a hand to those around me in need, and that is what I have always done, and have taught my children. Thankfully, these values have not become non-existent. My faith in others has been immensely magnified by this experience."
