WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $3.9 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to construct a taxiway and improve airfield lighting at Columbus Metropolitan Airport in Columbus, Ga.

"This funding will help improve the infrastructure at Columbus Metropolitan Airport and will keep aircraft moving safely and efficiently throughout Georgia," Secretary LaHood said."Making important investments in our aviation system promotes safety and economic growth in communities across the country."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant will fund 1,400 feet of pavement to complete the taxiway that runs parallel to Runway 6/24. The parallel taxiway will enhance safety by improving areas for aircraft to move to and from the runway. Taxiway construction will begin in spring 2013 and will take approximately 14 months.

The grant also will help fund lighting improvements for Runway 6/24, including a new electrical vault and airfield signs to meet FAA requirements. The lighting project will begin in fall 2013 and will take about seven months. Total cost for both projects is $4.3 million. The Georgia Dept. of Transportation and Columbus Airport Commission will fund the $435,000 balance of the project.

"This grant enhances the operational safety and efficiency of the Columbus Metropolitan Airport which allows continued quality service to its passengers," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for airport improvement projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
