Press Release - U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces $2.5 Million Grant for Raleigh County Memorial Airport in W. Va.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $2.5 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to expand the aircraft parking area at the Raleigh County Memorial Airport in Beckley, W.Va.

"This funding will help improve the Raleigh County Memorial Airport's infrastructure and will keep aircraft moving safely and efficiently through West Virginia," Secretary LaHood said."Making important investments in our aviation system promotes safety and economic growth in communities across the country."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant funding will relieve congestion on the parking area for transient aircraft and will accommodate aircraft that now have to park on taxiways. The project will accommodate current airport users and future growth. Construction will begin this fall and will take about five months to complete.

"This grant enhances the operational safety and efficiency of the Raleigh County Memorial Airport," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for airport improvement projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
