Press Release - U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces $2.5 Million Grant for New Orleans Airport

WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $2.5 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to study possible locations for a potential new main terminal at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

"This funding will help New Orleans continue its efforts to assess future needs at Louis Armstrong International Airport," said Secretary LaHood. "Making important investments in our aviation system promotes safety and economic growth in communities across the country."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant will provide funding to complete a terminal building feasibility study that will evaluate the future needs of the terminal site and future development of the terminal area. In addition, the study will explore possible alternative sites for terminal facilities. Initial recommendations are expected sometime in 2013.

"Louis Armstrong Airport is a valuable part of the national airspace system," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

Airport Improvement Program provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports nationally are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations and general aviation activities.
