Dozens upon dozens of medical professionals with an interest in mesothelioma will flock to Boston next week to attend the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMiG) 11th International Conference, an event that will allow them to gather the latest information on this asbest0s-caused cancer that kills 2,000 to 3,000 Americans each year and tens of thousands more around the world.

According to a press release by the organization, the conference will include sessions spearheaded by some of the top names in mesothelioma treatment and research, not only in the U.S. but also from around the world, including Dr. David Sugarbaker, Dr. Lee Krug, Dr. Raphael Bueno, Dr. Raja Flores, and many others, all from some of the top cancer clinics in the world.

Three days of sessions will include topics such as genomics, biomarkers for mesothelioma detection and diagnosis, the pathogenesis of mesothelioma, chemotherapy, surgery, imaging and staging, immunology, radiation therapy, clinical trials, and much more. Doctors will also gather to discuss and brainstorm on new directions and future studies in hopes of finding new and better ways to combat mesothelioma.

In addition to sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions, and other opportunities for doctors and researchers, the conference, which takes place from September 11 through 14, will also provide sessions for nurses who are involved in the care of mesothelioma patients. Sponsored by Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s nursing department, the sessions will cover subjects such as specialized nursing care for thoracic ICU patients, easing the burdens of patient and family, the complex needs of the mesothelioma victim, and the impact of quality nursing care on patients and families dealing with the disease.

The iMiG organization is made up of both scientists and clinicians who striving to “understand, cure, and prevent mesothelioma.” Members come from around the world, all eager to exchange knowledge about this cancer, which is difficult to treat and often results in a swift death sentence. The group held its first conference in Paris in 1991 and has organized similar conferences every two years since that time. Organizers note that the conferences are “the ideal forum to stimulate ideas and establish collaborations as well as to initiate intense discussions…”.
