Announcing the Winners of the “Save Our Skipper” Online Visual Petition Contest!

Several weeks ago, Sea Shepherd announced a call to action in honor of the invaluable work done by our founder and president Captain Paul Watson, to show Captain Watson and those that seek to confine him that the global community values his lifelong commitment to our oceans and continues to rally in support of his freedom. After much deliberation, we are pleased to announce the winners of the “Save Our Skipper” Online Visual Petition Contest.

The response was overwhelming, the submissions — inspiring. Over 1,000 images were submitted directly to Sea Shepherd or to Flickr for consideration. It seems Captain Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd have moved individuals across the globe to take action in the name of our oceans.

The selection process was incredibly difficult and we appreciate everyone’s time, dedication, and artistic talent. Submissions ran the gamut from photography to watercolor paintings and striking computer-generated visuals. We chose the two selections that we felt best answered one of the questions posed: “Why is Captain Paul Watson important to our planet?” or “Why does Sea Shepherd matter to you?”

Winners were judged and chosen by celebrity supporters Perrey Reeves (Entourage) and young actor/Sea Shepherd youth ambassador, Zack Callison (I’m in the Band, Diary of a Single Mom). Longtime Sea Shepherd crewmember and director of Sea Shepherd’s land-based unit, O.R.C.A. Force, Laurens de Groot, rounded out the judging panel, sitting in for Captain Paul Watson

The winner of the contest is Megan Spooner with her acrostic definition of why Captain Watson is important to the planet. The wordplay in the image literally spells out why Captain Watson is a hero for our environment and the seal image is incredibly emotive.

The runner-up, “Flynn For the Oceans 2012,” boldly and touchingly represents why Sea Shepherd matters, with its focus on conserving and protecting our oceans for future generations.

Thank you to all who participated in the contest and for taking the time to show your support for Captain Watson and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society either by creating a visual symbol of support, donating to support our campaigns, or participating in one of our rallies to oppose Germany’s unjust and politically motivated attempt to arrest and extradite Captain Watson to Costa Rica and Japan.  We are grateful for every one of you!
