Celebrate Maritime History With Special Fares On Arnold Line Classic Ferries, July 26-Labor Day
New, More Affordable Service to Mackinac Island Runs Exclusively from St. Ignace Docks
/EINPresswire.com/Mackinac Island, Mich - July 25, 2012 -- Bob Brown, general manager of Arnold Transit Co., announced the return of the Arnold Line Classic Mackinac Island Ferry Service for those traveling from St. Ignace, Mich., to Mackinac Island, Mich. The classic line will run to and from the historic island, July 26 through Labor Day. Round-trip fares are $14 for adults (13 years and older), $7 for children (5-12 years) and free for 4 years and younger. These special prices are nearly half what other ferry services to the island charge. No other discounts will apply.
"Over the years we have received many requests from visitors to bring back our classic ferries," said Brown. "So this is a way to feature our nostalgic vessels that ran before we expanded our fleet to include high-speed catamarans. Riding the classic ferries is a much more leisurely trip with time to enjoy and photograph the Straits of Mackinac and the spectacular views of the Mackinac Bridge, the mainland, islands and lighthouses."
Travelers can purchase tickets and board the classic ferries at the Arnold Line St. Ignace docks, 99 N. State St., located across the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. St. Ignace departure times will be 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Round-trip ticket holders can then return to St. Ignace on one of the classic vessels at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. or may choose to return on one of Arnold's high-speed catamarans at any of their scheduled departures. Times given are Eastern Daylight Time.
Arnold Line's classic and fast catamaran ferries feature open-air, top-deck seating, glass-enclosed, lower-deck seating and restrooms. All Arnold Line ferries are also wheelchair accessible. The classic Arnold ferries can hold up to 600 people comfortably, double the capacity of other ferry line vessels on the Straits of Mackinac, so visitors rarely have to wait for the next boat.
"Visitors will enjoy a piece of history and have the opportunity to visit a gem of a destination," said Brown. "This is the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, a significant period of history for the island, as well as the 125th anniversary for the Grand Hotel. Riding the Arnold Line classic ferries will add to the historic experience of visiting the island."
Founded in 1878, Arnold Transit is the largest and longest running ferry fleet transporting passengers and freight to and from Mackinac Island. The first ferries were fueled by steam and coal and were replaced by a diesel fleet in the 1960s. The modern, faster catamarans were added in the 1980s. Reservations are not required and tickets may be purchased at any Arnold reception center in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. No other ferry service in the region offers more boat departures, a longer season or charters and cruises that are more memorable. Catamaran ferry tickets may also be purchased online.
