On Wednesday, July 4, 2012, a tour bus transporting casino-goers careened out of control just outside of New York City and crashed, resulting in injuries to 24 people, including the driver. The accident occurred in New Rochelle, some two miles south of a March 2011 tour bus crash that killed 15, explains NY accident lawyer Mr. Reiter.

According to reports, the bus was traveling along an early morning route on Interstate 95 from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut to Chinatown in Queens when it struck a median barrier. After it struck the median, it veered over three lanes and slid approximately 500 feet along an outer barrier before coming to a stop. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for minor injuries. Police reports cited the driver for driving too fast during wet conditions.

The bus company, Star Tag Inc., has been subject to four citations for unsafe driving in the past two years. Furthermore, every recorded company inspection over the past two years has resulted in vehicle maintenance violations. U.S. Department of Transportation records state that authorities caught a motor coach traveling at least 15 miles per hour over the speed limit in May 2012.

As of July 5, no charges were yet filed.

This accident comes nearly a month after safety officials cited 24 curbside bus operations for safety violations. The sweep was the largest federal crackdown on tour bus safety violations in history.

Mr. Reiter, stated that tour bus operators have been the cause of numerous fatalities and serious injuries over the last several years because they employed unfit drivers and failed to enforce necessary work rules prohibiting drivers from operating buses when they have insufficient sleep. Insufficient training of bus drivers in how to respond to flat tires and other common emergencies has also been implicated in tour bus accidents.
