The American Lung Association has named longtime volunteer and Providence, R.I., resident the Honorable Walter R. Stone to its National Board of Directors. In this role, he will help lead the Lung Association’s work to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. 
“Walter Stone has tirelessly served the American Lung Association and its fight for air for a number of years,” said Ross P. Lanzafame, Chair of the Board of the American Lung Association. “His leadership and passion for our mission will further enhance the breadth of our National Board of Directors.”
Judge Stone began his volunteer service with the American Lung Association more than a decade ago and has served on the local Board of Directors at the American Lung Association of Rhode Island. He has also served the Lung Association at the national level as a member of its Advocacy and Marketing & Communications committees, as well as its Nationwide Assembly.
Stone is an associate justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court. From 1997 until his judicial appointment in December 2010, Stone served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Rhode Island Legal Services’ (RILS), where he began his career as a staff attorney in 1972. 
He has worked for the Rhode Island Public Defender and as special assistant to the Attorney General of Rhode Island. Throughout his career, he also served as a trial attorney with Stone, Clifton and Clifton, and as a partner and chairman of the Criminal Law Group at Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C.
Stone has served on three state judicial selection panels and has received numerous awards, including the Rhode Island Historical Society’s 2003 John H. Chafee Award for Community Service and the Rhode Island Bar Association’s 2005 “Pro Bono Publico Award,” which recognizes the outstanding efforts of attorneys who have provided equal access to justice to the indigent through the Volunteer Lawyer Program.
He is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Scholarship. He also served 15 months in Vietnam as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
