PRESS RELEASE – Innovative OpenCEM tool supports Samoa’s transition to renewable energy

SAMOA, April 15 - Apia, SAMOA – Australia is pleased to support Samoa’s critical work towards 100% renewable energy through the handover of the OpenCEM electricity sector modelling tool.

OpenCEM Samoa represents a crucial advancement in energy sector planning for the Government of Samoa, through the Electric Power Corporation and the Office of the Regulator, by enabling informed decision-making in energy policy and technology options to support long-term planning for cost effective and orderly transition to renewable energy.

Designed initially for Australia, OpenCEM Samoa has been tailored by ITP Renewables Australia in partnership with Samoa’s Electric Power Corporation, Office of the Regulator, and the Australia Pacific Climate Partnership, to suit Samoa’s specific requirements and energy needs.

At a ceremony to recognise the handover of OpenCEM Samoa last week, the Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Ms Claire McGeechan, highlighted the critical role of strong partnerships and innovative solutions in addressing the challenges of climate change.

Samoa’s leadership in combating climate change is exemplary, both in setting ambitious national goals and advocating for global action.

Your nation’s adoption of OpenCEM sets a regional precedent, highlighting Samoa’s collaborative spirit and foresight in embracing technologies that support a sustainable energy future” said Ms McGeechan.

The Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, the Honourable Olo Fiti Afoa Vaai, lauded the projects alignment with Samoa’s national goals.

“Our aim is to provide affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all. This project supports this commitment and will empower EPC and Office of the Regulator to look at ways to empower systems capacity in response to stronger planning, renewable integration, and sector decision making,” said the Honourable Minister Olo.

The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, enabling ITP Renewables Australia to provide technical assistance to the Electric Power Corporation for the first year of OpenCEM’s operation.

END.
