CANADA, March 28 - The Callbeck House in Central Bedeque has been designated a Provincial Heritage Place under the PEI Heritage Places Protection Act.

The designation means the property must be preserved and the building cannot be altered in a way that would detract from its historical significance. It is located on what was known as Strong’s Corner in the mid-1800s and, for well over a century, has been called Callbeck’s Corner in the community of Central Bedeque.

“The Callbeck House is a very significant part of Island culture and history. From the building itself, to the beautiful rural setting, the house has important connections to the family, early settlers in the community and to business leaders. This designation is a great recognition of this historical property.”

The house has been in the family since 1872. Hon. Catherine Callbeck, a former Premier of PEI and Canadian senator, and her brother, businessman William (Bill) Callbeck, grew up there, just across the road from their family’s store. At one point, three generations of Callbecks lived in the house.

“This designation is truly an honor for our family,” said Hon. Catherine Callbeck. “I’m very appreciative that the heritage of our property is preserved with this designation by the Government of Prince Edward Island.”

Bill Callbeck says the designation compliments the work of the Bedeque Area Historical Museum.  “We are honored our house is formally recognized as one of PEI’s historic places.”
